How many people are there whom we have known and forgotten already while they were still alive? How many have gone out into the wide world themselves, how many have been taken away by force - do we have any news about those who have left Latvia? We have created the Nekropole project - a cultural and historical encyclopedia of people, events and burial places around the world.

History is made by people, but written down by historians. Most often, by those loyal to power. Yet history is also researched and recorded by many of us, but these records usually remain inaccessible to a wider circle. Unfortunately, this is the case even in many museums, archives or databases. At best, they are visited, used and therefore seen and read by a narrow circle of interested people. In Nekropole, anyone has the opportunity to write, thereby creating a broader and more complete view of a time, its events and the people in it. When many memories disappear, an emptiness forms in the history of the relevant era, state, people and families. Our duty before our ancestors, the past and our people is to preserve memories of people and keep their remembrance.

At present the encyclopedia contains information about approximately 2.8 million persons, entered in approximately 7.5 million cards, as well as information about more than three and a half thousand cemeteries. The encyclopedia includes information provided by the international organization Memorial about people deported to the GULAG; we have for the first time published in Latvian information about people from Latvia shot at the Butovo firing range. Thousands of fates and life stories have been identified, but even more remains ungrasped and unknown. We have created a technically modern and unique site where anyone can participate in writing history and understanding it. We continue to search and collect, but of course we cannot do it alone. We have created the White Book, where anyone can write about their own people for history. In our view, preserving memories and remembrance must become not a compulsory task for each person, but a duty given by conscience as gratitude that we exist and that we have our own state.
Nekropole will never be finished. Every person who once came into this world deserves to be remembered, mentioned and have their memory preserved by someone. We believe that everyone, not only those who have gained fame and great wealth, deserves respect and bright remembrance. Everyone.
