LEA represents a unique interconfessional movement in Latvia, called to unite all Christians and people of good will for mutual understanding and the fellowship of nations, for proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ and activating Christian values throughout society — in personal life, family, science, culture and politics.
LEA is called to develop cooperation between church and state on social, moral and ethical questions. The Alliance was founded on 20 September 2002 in Rīga, when Christians and the spiritual leaders of the main Christian churches met at Rīga Cathedral.
Three words, one movement
The name LEA is read as Latvian Initiative, Evangelical Unity, the Alliance's Voice:
- Initiative — to advance and realise proposals and projects that can actively influence society locally and internationally.
- Unity — the unity of evangelical believers for which Jesus Christ prayed (John 17): the unity of our multinational community across large and small Christian confessions, independent churches, Christian organisations and individuals.
- Voice — the Alliance's voice as part of the European Evangelical Alliance since 2003 and of the World Evangelical Alliance — an enormous privilege and responsibility within a worldwide fellowship of more than 600 million evangelical Christians in 128 countries.
Latvia's example
Latvia is a wonderful example to other nations in preserving traditional Christian values and interconfessional church cooperation. Latvia became the first country whose parliament — the Saeima — affirmed family and marriage, understood as the voluntary union of a man and a woman, among the foundational values of society.
LEA is called to remain faithful in fulfilling the Great Commission of Jesus Christ:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” — Matthew 28:18–20
