Spanish mime Carlos Martinez in Latvia

Spanish mime Carlos Martinez
(Carlos Martinez)

From October 2 to 6, 2011, professional mime Carlos Martinez from Spain will visit Latvia for the seventh time. The artist was born in Spain in 1955. In 1980 he began studies at the pantomime school Taller de Mimi y Teatro, and later studied dramatic art at El Timbal. From 1982 to 1987 he continued his studies with professors Manuel Carlos Lillo and Jorge Vera. Since 1986 Carlos has worked as a professional mime actor. The language of mime is a very personal language and, most importantly, it needs no translator. Carlos has performed many times not only in Spain, but in most European countries, as well as in Canada and the USA. Carlos not only performs, but also leads seminars for actors and mimes. Carlos has written more than 50 mime sketches. His first book, In Silence, has been published in Spanish, German and French; his second book, Word of Mime, has been published in German and French. Work is currently underway on his third book, The Four Countries.
In July 2004 Carlos Martinez won at the prestigious European theatre festival ALMADA in Portugal. In February 2005 the premiere of Carlos Martinez's new program Human Rights took place. This program was created by portraying various sketches on articles of the Declaration of Human Rights. At a time when human rights issues both in the world and here in Latvia are so sharpened and exposed, Carlos Martinez allows each of us to look at ourselves and see what kind of people we are.
Carlos's Spanish charm and humor allow him to be understood in any culture and nation. Our society is no exception. The language of mime needs no explanation. One only has to watch attentively in order to understand it. In Latvia the artist has performed in schools, army units and churches, met with actors of the National Theatre, and led several seminars for those interested in pantomime. It is surprising that Carlos can address any audience without saying a word. It is hard to remain serious when seeing how the artist portrays our everyday life, both in the kitchen and at a bus stop, because in every sketch each of us can see ourselves. See ourselves and smile.
Preparing for his seventh visit to Latvia, Carlos Martinez is creating a new program, 30 Years Creating Silence, which will include the best sketches from his various programs.
Carlos Martinez's trip to Latvia is organized by the Swiss organization PROFILE Productions, led by manager Jean-Daniel v. Lerber, in cooperation with Riga Āgenskalns Baptist Church.

Guest performances will take place on October 3 and 4 at Dailes Theatre at 19:00
