Jaunākās ziņas (angļu valodā) no latviešu misionāriem Papua Jaungvinejā

Our current activities could be divided in to two groups:

1) Ongoing projects – the projects, which have been started in years 2004 and 2005;

2) New projects – started in 2006.

Ongoing projects:

1) Oksapmin – OT translation project

During this year Oksapmin translation team already has participated in the next level of Translation Training Course as well as in Basic Hebrew course.  The last workshop for this year - Key Term workshop - where Oksapmin team are going to participate is going to take place, starting from next week, November 7. We are providing all necessary consulting for the Oksapmin team as well as helping with logistics.

2) Imbo-Ungu – OT translation project

The main translator, Pastor Tande Tumbo, from Imbo-Ungu, annually spends some time in Ukarumpa. This year Enoks and Tande have been working on OT narrative. There is also a real need to train him and his team to make good back translation, to make it possible to be checked by some consultant. In January 2007, Tande will come to Ukarumpa and Enoks will help him to work on 1 Samuel.

There has also been a plan to make a Translation awareness workshop (TAW) in Imbo-Ungu language area where there are approximately 45 thousand speakers. Last year in joined meeting when Enoks, Tande and BTA representatives where discussing possibilities to organize this workshop they were thinking that pastor Zumbek from BTA could lead the workshop in October, November 2006. However, things have changed since then as in September this year Zumbek’s wife Egue died from cancer.  There is still hope to hold TAW sometime in the first part of 2007.

3) University of PNG

Starting from the end of August and all September Enoks was teaching at University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby. The main subjects were Translation Techniques and Sociolinguistics. While he was there, he also found that Jubilee University College was looking for lecturers. So, he was asked to teach Christian Foundation Principles and Ethics.

Jubilee University College expressed great need for him to continue the same subjects in the 2007, sometime in February or March.

University of PNG would like that Enoks would take part in the editing of the textbook of Translation Techniques.

Time in Port Moresby was very fruitful and there would be lots of things to do in future.

New projects

1) Aiyura Valley outreach project

After last SIL PNG conference there has been new project started in Aiyura Valley (where Ukarumpa is located) in order to engage the local churches in Bible translation. That also involves some training for Valley pastors, Sunday school teachers, Youth leaders etc.

December 5-8 we both are planning to run a course for local pastors introducing them with Basic Hebrew and Greek as well as some OT and NT background. Valley pastors have already expressed great interest in getting more Biblical knowledge so we are hoping to continue these courses as well some OT exegesis course in 2007.

2) OT Theology course

Starting from November 7, every Tuesday night Enoks will teach OT Theology here in Ukarumpa for expatriates. The course is designed for people who are busy during the day but who would still like to gain more knowledge in OT.

3) Dealing With Conflict Biblically (DWCB)

After finishing all 3 steps of DWCB course – basic, coaching, mediation – Antra now is involved in teaching this course to others. There is a plan to have Sunday School for adults every Sunday morning before English Service, starting November 12, to do DWCB basic course. Future plans for DWCB: basic courses on Monday nights, starting February 2007 as well as basic and coaching courses in April/May.

4) National Ladies Bible study

Every Monday lunchtime Antra takes part in leading of Bible study, which is mainly for national ladies who are working on centre or their village friends. It is a great experience for Antra to have fellowship with ladies from nearest villages, encouraging each other, praying and helping to grow spiritually.
